ICES Aquaculture dialogue

June 1, 2015 - June 2, 2015

ICES invites all stakeholders to an open dialogue meeting to discuss the future of sustainable aquaculture.

1-2 June 2015, IMR, Bergen, Norway

The aquaculture industry is the fastest growing food production sector in the world and is an important component of world food security. A strong science and knowledge base is needed to inform management practices and guide the development of a sustainable aquaculture industry.

In the ICES area, the science focus has evolved from developing the biological basis for aquaculture (developing species and mariculture systems) to assessing aquaculture and environmental interactions.

Open dialogue for a sustainable future

Dialogue with all partners is central to assess gaps and needs, and add value while avoiding duplication of efforts.

The ICES Aquaculture dialogue meeting takes place 1–2 June at IMR, Bergen Norway will bring together industry, stakeholders, managers, scientists, and others from the ICES community to discuss a common future developing the science needed to support sustainable aquaculture.

The meeting will focus on promoting dialogue on specific themes emerging from an introductory panel discussion. Breakout groups will work to develop ideas on how collaboration and future work can be shaped. Invited guests will contribute presentations to provide context.

The aim is to establish links between industry and managers for on-going communication of science needs and assessment, to clearly identify how the ICES advisory system can be used to support sustainable aquaculture development, and to highlight the benefits of transatlantic information exchange on aquaculture issues.

Sustainable aquaculture is an action area for ICES

ICES anticipates the future increased demand for aquaculture. In the Strategic Plan (2014–2018) ICES has made a number of deliberate choices, including to further develop ICES science, advisory, and data work on aquaculture.

As part of the work to produce the information and advice decision-makers need, ICES will respond to the evolving policy context and requests on aquaculture/aquaculture–environment interactions. This goal and related activities support the central focus of our Strategic Plan: to build a foundation of science around regional integrated ecosystem understanding, central to application of the ecosystem approach.
