Understanding fisheries technical rules

Fisheries technical measures encompass a large variety of rules which set various characteristics of fishing gear and specifications for its use or which restrict certain type of fishing in some areas or time periods. They are intended to prevent the catching of marine organisms that should not be caught in the first place (such as juvenile fish), or to protect fragile parts of the marine ecosystem. Such rules need to be formulated with, or make reference to, a large number of fisheries terms which are of a highly specialised or technical nature. By providing some basic information and illustrations in this regard, this paper aims to help non-experts become more familiar with the domain.
