FEG participation at the UN Ocean Conference
Chair of IUCN/CEM/FEG, Mr Serge Garcia along with members Mr. Jake Rice and Mrs. Despina Symons participated on behalf of FEG at the UN Ocean Conference that took place from 5-9 June in New York. They co-organised and participated in a multitude of events, see below for further information.
Rebuilding Fisheries for People and the Environment was held on 5th June co-organised by IUCN/CEM/FEG and FAO highlighting that rebuilding fisheries is not only rebuilding fish stcoks, but also rebuilding of economic, social and environmental values that productive and sustainable fisheries provide.
‘Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Fisheries for Human Well-Being’ took place on 9 June 2017 at the UN Headquarters in New York during the high-level UN Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14) (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development). The event was co-organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Fisheries Agency of Japan. Representatives of governments, scientific institutes, international organizations and civil society met to discuss ways to harmonize and coordinate efforts taking place in biodiversity and fisheries to ensure the convergence of the two agendas for the achievement of their mutual objectives.
‘Ecologically or Biologically Significant Marine Areas (EBSAs): Special places to accelerate implementation towards SDG 14’ took place on 8 June 2017 at the UN Headquarters in New York during the high-level UN Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14) (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development). The event was co-organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Global Ocean Biodiversity Initiative (GOBI). FEG Member Jake Rice took part as a panelist.
