EP Intergroup Newsletter November 2014: Editorial

Dear readers,

On 26 November 2014 during the plenary session of the Parliament in Strasbourg a vote will take place in each political group on their final priority list for the establishment of Intergroups for the mandate 2014-2019. This time again, the list of intergroups competing for official recognition from the Parliament is impressive. The hurdle is high since only a limited number of Intergroups will be officially established, although the exact number is not yet known. You will find the details on the process here.

The Intergroup on “Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development” is campaigning for its re-establishment as an official Intergroup of the European Parliament for the 5thconsecutive mandate since its establishment in 1994. This Intergroup has for 20 years provided a cross-party and cross-committee platform for MEPs to exchange and debate among themselves and with a wide range of stakeholders from NGOs, private sector, academia and civil society on environmental and socio-economic issues linked to the sustainable development of our planet.

This Intergroup has as its core mission the promotion of sustainable development principles, looking into available solutions and opportunities to address current and future environmental and socio-economic challenges, such as the threat of climate change, the loss of biodiversity as well as loss of jobs and competitiveness in Europe, and the need to create new growth models.

In this light, it has the objective to encourage strong involvement, dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders and to integrate sustainable development principles into EU decision-making and policy, building on political, scientific and practical expertise.

In order for this platform to continue to exist in the European Parliament we need your support for the final sprint of this campaign. Do please spread the word among your colleagues in order to have the support needed. You can find here the declaration to be signed to show your support for this Intergroup. 18 MEPs from the four main political groups in the Parliament (EPP, S&D, ECR and ALDE) are Chair and Vice-Chairs of this Intergroup: click here to see the structure of the Intergroup.

Thank you!
