High Level Panel on SDG 14
The panel was organized by UN-DESA Department of Economic and Social Affairs in July at the UN General Assembly. Jake Rice was an invited presenter and Panellist, speaking on the importance of not viewing SDG 14 on the oceans in isolation from the other SDGs. Rather it is important to conduct a mapping of the role of the ocean in meeting all 17 of the SDGs and their associated targets, and then planning coherent strategies that will make progress on multiple goals when possible, and especially will avoid actions that may promote some SDG targets, but more further from other targets on other SDGs. That message was missing in many of the other presentations at the session, which stressed individual targets of particular interest to specific participants, and was welcomed by the meeting organizers.
