MARES Conference, Portugal

Jake Rice invited to give a key note address on overfishing. He presented the results of a meta-analysis on the state of many of the fisheries managed by authorities that have sufficient resources to make efforts, rigorous assessments and sound management, control and surveillance of fisheries. These analyses documented that the period of serious overfishing was probably over by the late 1990s, and since the turn of the century improvements are common for fisheries in Europe, North America and Australia.  That does not mean all stocks have recovered, but at least overfishing has defeated greatly in frequency and severity, and recovery from past overfishing is underway in many sticks.
